Kid tested, mother approved

Well, just in case anyone is interested...

Obviously I won't be updating this blog any more, as I'm home forever. But! I have started a new one. Woohoo!

While the subject heading does refer to both this blog - which I have kept nice and PG due to the audience I've been writing for - and the tasty-yet-nutritious Kix cereal, it probably won't end up referring to the new one (I'm sort of expecting people's parents and the like not to be interested now that I'm back - though obviously everyone is welcome if they don't mind the fact that I'm 20 and sort of bitter). So only go look at it if you don't mind swear words and juvenile references to body parts.

Thank you.

Well, don't I feel like an idiot

Heheh. Heh. Hmm.

I'm not going back to England.

It's because of the current world situation, and also because of an illness in the family, and generally because it's an awkward time to be traveling so far. But don't worry, at least now I'm less likely to be blown up by terrorists! (Or more likely, I'm not sure which. Oh well.)

So, yeah.

Meanwhile, not quite so much in London as in Kansas City, Missouri...

Yeah, I'm writing this stateside, as I'm sure most of you know. Other than the study abroad Americans, I don't pretend there's anyone who reads this who I didn't already tell I was coming home for a visit. Anyhow, I'll be heading back to the UK on February 11th, just in time for second semester (hooray!). Looking forward to seeing my lovely Americans again, as well as meeting the new ones, although I'm not at all looking forward to admitting to Mike Foster that I didn't register for classes yet. Sigh.

Anyway, I hadn't meant to write at all while here because I'm not technically in London (well, obviously), but I figured I'd post a quick entry to see if anyone even bothers checking this sorry ghost town of a blog anymore. I'm hoping I'll be a little more faithful and regular in my entires this semester, as I have a very strict budgeting plan set out for myself which allows for almost no fun. Not that I view this blog as something to do only when you're almost going crazy for boredom, or anything like that. Just that I'll have more time on my hands and...right. ...Stop talking, Ruth.

If anyone does happen to still be reading this, leave me a little comment, won't you?

One more thing...

Happy (belated) birthday to Tommy Carter, two days ago! You best have done something fabulous to celebrate. (Wow, the computer lab lady has done away with all niceities and just came in here and shouted, "Everybody out now!" Crazy.)

Wah!

A quick post to apologize for disappearing again. Have had a lot to do - essays, portfolios, turning twenty, getting ready to move to Manchester... I'm going to Spain next week but after Christmas I should be close to sanity again. Yes. :)

In the meantime - discuss: What are some contributing factors to a British national identity, if indeed there is one? Do you think astral projection can someday be cultivated as a means of investigating crime? What is the meaning of today's subject heading?

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam

Yep. Went to Amsterdam last weekend. Becca and Shannon came down here on Friday the 22nd, and we sort of hung around London all weekend and then left for the Netherlands on Sunday the 24th. I will briefly summarize both experiences. First of all, the weekend in London:

  • Yay for girly time! We all stayed at Erin's in the manner of a huge slumber party.
  • I was within ten feet of Kenneth Branagh again. We went to see The Play What I Wrote on Saturday, which Branagh directed. Every night they have a different 'surprise celebrity guest.' Past guests have included Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Sting, etc. Saturday night? Daniel Radcliffe. Yeah, that's right. So, the kid can act. I mean, the kid is brilliant. I don't know if I should be really happy about it or wistful because I already wonder if I can be that good and he's just thirteen. Blast. Anyhow, we hung out by the stage door afterwards like obsessive freaks (plus, we wanted to obtain an autograph for Erin's host brother - he's eight and loves Harry Potter). Just across the way was the stage door for Macbeth, starring Sean Bean, who I was told had a cold that evening but never managed to wish him well in person. Hmm. Anyhow, the three main actors came out and each very quickly flashed a quick smile and darted into a pub - the only one to linger was Toby Jones, who was an adorable little man and looked very shocked and pleased when we all clapped upon his emergence from the theatre. When I read in the program that he was the voice of Dobby in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, my opinion of rehearsals being crazy amounts of fun were confirmed. You know, what with the Harry Potter connection and all... Sigh. Why can't I be the special celebrity guest? Anyway, back to the list.
  • Becca and Shannon are oodles of fun. Oodles. :)
  • Amsterdam - first of all, we missed our plane for departure and had to buy new one-way tickets. Many cigarettes were smoked, much chocolate was consumed, and I believe I had a giant glass of wine. But I felt it was all well-deserved. Don't ask me how much it set me back, I don't want to talk about it. Arrgh.
  • Anyhow, we got to Amsterdam, albeit a few hours late, and had little difficulty finding our hostel. There was a brief mix-up about Shannon's hotel, but once that was sorted, we all had a good time in our respective domiciles. Kathryn and Erin and I stayed at The Flying Pig Palace, full of extremely chilled-out dirty hippies. It was awesome. (Note: Now that I think about it, all of Amsterdam is filled with extremely chilled-out dirty hippies. Hmm.)
  • We went to many fine musems. Actually, one fine musem, a boring one and one that was just a bit dodgy. They were the Van Gogh museum, the Modern Art Musem (I know, so full of promise, yet such a disappointment) and the Sex Museum. That last one was educational but at one point Shannon and Kathryn and I accidentally got trapped in a very small booth showing an old seventies porn clip and so none of us could really look at each other afterwards.
  • This list is no longer a 'brief summary,' is it?

Erm. Yes, well. We got back the day before Thanksgiving. The school gave us Americans a lovely dinner on Thursday, invitation only, in the Old House. A lot of people's families came to share it with us. It was gorgeous. It's funny - in America, Thanksgiving is always set up to be a big fancy thing, and then once you sit down you throw all manners to the winds and just dig in like crazed dogs. But the dinner the school gave us actually was all neat and refined, with wine and little hors d'ouvres I couldn't even identify and post-turkey coffee in tiny little doll cups. It was a very endearing English take on an American custom - very very sweet of them, really.

Oh, oh! Erin and I got our hair cut just before Thanksgiving dinner. We are now sexy rockstars. Yes we are.

I think that's all I have to report. I'm off now to...do something legitimate.

Pure evil is really, really short

Erin and I just watched Evil Dead with some film class here on campus. It was the director's cut, I think. A good time was had, but was all that drawn-out zombie death really necessary? And WHY are zombies filled with guacamole?

So many unanswered questions.

Ability to tell witty anecdotes...failing...

Arrgh, arrgh. I can't keep up with this thing. The problem is that I make a promise about telling a specific story the next time I post, and then when I feel like posting again it's about something else. So I wait for motivation to fulfill the original promise, but it never comes, and then three weeks have gone by with no posting whatsoever and you people miss out on lots of fun news. I've really got to stop making promises.

Anyhow. To sum up - there really aren't any more Wales stories that work as anecdotes. I will tell you all about the Pig of God experience sometime, probably, but not right now as I am not feeling particularly holy. I went to the big Harry Potter premiere in London and shamelessly flagged down the attention of a couple celebrities by screaming at them like a little fangirl (oh wait - I am a little fangirl). Namely Alan Rickman and Shirley Henderson, but we also got to see basically everyone there was to see. And, also along Harry Potter lines, I got to go see the movie somewhat early as there were special preview showings here in the UK. And well-deserved, too. Usually the UK gets movies two or three months after the US shows them; it's really quite sad. So don't expect me to have heard of any of the not-epically-huge movies that are out in the States right now. Sigh.

All right, that's the news you've missed. Let's see. I'm going to Amsterdam soon! And Shannon and Becca are coming to visit this Friday! I'm very very excited to see them - especially to show them just how easy it is to get around London. Also, I may be...going to Italy? Possibly? I will do everything in my power not to repeat the creepy crawfish pasta experience of two years ago. Yeesh.

Hmm. I'll be living with Allison (who I still have not successfully been able to contact and probably thinks I hate her or something - but every time I call no one is home) and Laine next year, in a very sexy duplex. Assuming everything works out, of course - but for the purpose of this paragraph we will assume that everything goes smoothly. Now, we're not supposed to have pets in said duplexes - but how hard can it really be to hide one little cat? Truly? Laine? Allison? Your thoughts on this? ;) Granted, I'm basically kidding. ...Basically. ::shifty eyes::

Oh no. I have used RPG colons in my blog. Clearly, it's time to stop before I break down and start typing things like 'IMHO' and 'ROFL.' Especially that last one, as I would have to be laughing at something I myself have said, and that would make me look like a jerk. Right.
